Paris, Wednesday 16 January – The International Campaign to Ban Landmines (ICBL) joined Handicap International, Human Rights Watch and the Arms Observatory to participate in the conference “Acting Together for Humanitarian Disarmament.“ ICBL Ambassador and Nobel Laureate, Jody Williams opened the conference, which brought together representatives from the United Nations, the International Committee of the Red Cross and Red Crescent, the French and Norwegian Governments, among others.

The event - one of the last in a series of events co-organised by ICBL celebrating 20 years of action since the creation of the coalition against antipersonnel mines - featured discussion by partner organisations on the status of campaigns for the elimination and/or control of arms.

Organisations participating in the event co-signed a declaration calling for continued engagement by humanitarian disarmament actors in support of existing treaties, as well as on the French Government to uphold International Humanitarian Law and protections for civilians in conflict situations.

The Regional Counsel of the Île de France, the magazine Alternatives Internationales, the Student’s Association of the Master’s Programme in International Cooperation, Humanitarian Action and Political Development at the University of Paris, Sorbonne, and the organisation Contrôlez les Armes, hosted the public debate. The full conference programme and common declaration by disarmament actors can be downloaded below.
