ICBL-CMC Urges New US Administration Policy Realignment with Mine Ban Treaty and Convention on Cluster Munitions Objectives

(Geneva, 10 November) – The International Campaign to Ban Landmines and Cluster Munition Coalition is highly encouraged by indications from President-elect Joe Biden to re-engage in global commitments, conventions and treaties, and the stated intent to restore United States’ landmine policy to its de-facto compliance with the Mine Ban Treaty. We call upon the President-elect and the incoming administration to immediately change course on U.S. landmine and cluster munition policies, including prohibiting production and use of these indiscriminate and inhumane weapons and acceding to the Mine Ban Treaty and Convention on Cluster Munitions. 

On 26 October, ICBL-CMC member, US Campaign to Ban Landmines issued a press release and policy memo calling on a new administration to reverse changes made in the past three years that have moved the United States further from support of international agreements banning antipersonnel mines and cluster munitions.

News of the United States Administration change and the opportunity for a realignment of policy aims with the international conventions, comes one week ahead of the Mine Ban Treaty Eighteenth Meeting of States Parties, and the Second Review Conference of the Convention on Cluster Munitions.

ICBL-CMC will launch its flagship Landmine Monitor report on 12 November,examining, among other issues, the extent to which States Parties and countries in general, adhere to the ban policy.

Nobel Prize laureate ICBL-CMC is a global civil society coalition working to end the unacceptable harm to civilians caused by landmines and cluster munitions, at their time of deployment and for decades after.
